Tucked away in the picturesque Tuscan town of Leccio lies a hidden gem known as Sammezzano Castle. While Leccio is famous for being home to the fashionable outlet The Mall, the true historical treasure of the town lies in the form of this magnificent castle.
Sammezzano Castle holds the distinction of being the largest Moorish-style castle in Italy, boasting a rich history that dates back centuries. Its creator and owner, Ferdinando Panciatichi Ximenes d'Aragona, was deeply fascinated by Moorish architecture due to his Iberian heritage. He believed that the roots of the Renaissance could be traced back to the East, and he dedicated his life to bringing this vision to life through the construction of an Eastern palace in Tuscany.
Construction of the castle spanned an impressive 36 years, from 1853 to 1889. During this time, Ferdinando personally oversaw every aspect of the project, from drafting plans to supervising craftsmen and ensuring the quality of the tiles produced in the kiln located on-site. In addition to his architectural endeavors, Ferdinando was also involved in the financing of the unification of Italy, although he quickly became disillusioned with the political landscape of the time.
Today, the walls of Sammezzano Castle whisper tales of its illustrious past, including its transformation into a luxurious hotel in the 1950s. The hotel's opulent interiors served as the backdrop for Pier Paolo Pasolini's film "The Flower of 1001 Nights." However, financial difficulties led to the hotel's bankruptcy, and the castle now stands abandoned and crumbling, alongside the unfinished modern wing nearby.
Despite its current state of disrepair, Sammezzano Castle remains a symbol of Italy's rich cultural heritage and architectural prowess. Efforts are underway to preserve and restore this historic landmark, with the castle currently listed for sale at a price of 20 million euros. However, the cost of restoration is estimated to be in the millions as well, presenting a formidable challenge for potential buyers.
As the fate of Sammezzano Castle hangs in the balance, it serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of preserving Italy's architectural treasures for future generations to enjoy.
